Keeping children active and busy can sometimes be a difficult task for a parent to accomplish. One of parents main concerns for their children should be keeping them off the street after school. After-school activities should include homework, helping out around the home, or extra curricular activities that may include sports or clubs. However a harsh reality remains the same for many children: they finish a day at school and then roam the streets, missing dinner and picking up bad habits from other kids such as smoking or drugs.
One of the most important things parents can do to help their children steer clear of the bad habits is to keep them occupied in after-school activities. Whether it's joining a club or signing up for a sport; making the choice to keep children occupied will stem benefits far beyond just keeping them off the street.
When children are young they are adapting to their changing bodies and the environment around them. Thus being said, children involved in activities and sports that keep them occupied are more likely to become accustomed to always staying busy and active. They become instilled with the idea that being lazy is not an option and that being active is a normal and healthy way to live.
Keeping children involved in activities helps to build strong morals. For example: a child who joins a sporting team will learn from a young age skills and virtues such as teamwork, camaraderie, respect, dedication, pride, confidence, responsibility etc. Whether it may be gymnastics, dance, baseball, hockey, or swimming; any form of activity will build a childs self worth through process of accomplishment and dedication.
Of Canadian children aged 2-17 26% are obese or overweight, this number up 15% from 1978. With these numbers so high and on a continual climb it's not hard to see why keeping kids healthy should be of a tremendous concern.
Many children have the option of participating in extra curricular activities offered by their school. Taking advantage of activities offered by school is a great way to show school spirit, make new friends and memories that can last a lifetime.
For older students; joining a gym or taking full advantage of the one offered at school is another great way to stay active and healthy throughout the year. Supplying children with a rec-center or gym membership will give them the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of exercise through weights, swimming, basketball and various other activities offered by these facilities.
Parents and kids can even go one step further by joining teams or classes outside of school such as football, swimming, dance, aerobics, basketball etc. Teams or classes taken outside of school are sure to keep children occupied for a couple hours a few times a week. These classes and teams give children something to look forward to throughout the week while promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. Classes or team sports will help children learn and develop new skills and talents that can be finely tuned throughout their youth and into their adulthood.
The main focus for the new year should be one of goal setting - academically and physically. Students and parents should set goals together for academic success and physical well-being. Parents should also strive for an active balance in their lives as well. After all, life's about harmonious balance...mentally and physically.
